Florida's Everglades - Sea Kayak Adventure
EXPLORING THE EVERGLADES
A biologically diverse and fascinating land, the Everglades enthrall
all who journey there. Join us in this tropical backcountry, where
freshwater and sea mix and mingle. While making our way from Flamingo
to Everglade City, we will sea kayak across expansive bays to
beautiful island beaches. A photographer's paradise, serious wilderness,
teeming wildlife, and extreme sunsets. Open-water sea kayaking
experience a must.
St. Marys River - Florida and Georgia
Beautiful hardwood forests frame the gentle
curves of the St. Marys River. White sandbars are found at almost
every bend, making camping an easy and enjoyable addition to your
paddling trip. This tea-colored river rises in the Okefenokee
Swamp at a place called Ellicott's Mound. The history of the St.
Marys is an interesting one. Old sailing vessels called "tramps"
would come hundreds of miles off their course to get fresh water
from the river for drinking. Traders Hill was once a thriving
trading post on the river and the county seat of Charlton County,
Georgia. Wildlife is abundant along this wilderness trail, especially
herons, egrets, osprey, and turtles. You might also look for bear
or deer.
Paddling the Suwannee River
The Suwannee River is 207 miles in length
within Florida; 280 miles long when including Big Alligator Creek
in Georgia, which is a headwater tributary to the Suwannee. The
river proper begins in the Okefenokee Swamp, a vast wetland wilderness
in southeast Georgia and northeast Florida, and enters the Gulf
of Mexico north of Cedar Key.
Withlacoochee River
The Withlacoochee River flows out of the
Green Swamp in west central Florida. The canoe trail twists and
bends through the sandhill area as it moves toward the northwest.
Hardwood forests with an understory of cabbage palm and saw palmetto
border the river. Further downstream the hills disappear as you
paddle through lush swampland with cypress, gum and maple adorned
with air plants. The overhanging limbs form a lacy canopy above
you. Much of the canoe trail flows through the Withlacoochee State
Forest, but there are scattered residential areas along the river.
The variety of habitats offers incredible opportunities for nature
study. Wildlife is abundant along the river. Deer, turkey, otter, andalligator
are common. Wood duck, wood stork, white ibis, and anhinga can
also be seen along the river.
